Providing school uniforms for disadvantaged secondary school pupils

Hi All,.

As members of the OCC, we are all proud of our collective school heritage. Perhaps now enhanced as our school is enjoying a well-earned reputation, both in academic excellence and the ongoing integration of a wide range of pupils, including disadvantaged youngsters, asylum seekers and refugee students. To assist these individuals, as you may have read in the last newsletter, our school has a specific ‘go fund me’ page to help purchase uniforms.

I am one among many of us who, as school kids, will well remember our families’ daily efforts to provide our basic needs, capped by their then struggle to provide a school uniform. My Mum well understood the importance of a uniform that both identified the school we attended and enabled all to blend into one big unit as we walked through the gates.

Following OCC committee’s agreement to support such a good cause, an announcement of their contribution to the fund will be made at the AGM .But hopefully it won’t stop there. As we cast our mind back, I am sure many members will identify with the families and pupils who now will benefit from this fund. Remembering their own heritage, I know of at least two members who have already made a personal contribution. I obviously pen these few words in the sincere hope that it may evoke a positive remembrance of your own youth and, of course, trusting you are then able to make a donation.

To those who have, I thank you for reading the above. You may gather this is the first time, with emotions apparent, that I am asking others to donate but, for sure, I believe this a great cause.

Oh, guess someone is asking if I am donating. Answer yes.

Dennis Warwick
Vice President Old Camdenians

Many thanks to Dennis and to the winners of last month’s George Ives 50+ Club draw who donated their winnings to this fund that takes the fund over its target – well done! As Dennis says the OCC will announce their contribution to the fund at the AGM later this month at the school.

Hon. Sec. OCC

For those of you who missed our President’s message in our September newsletter.

“We would also like to draw your attention to an article published in the Evening Standard: School pioneers: why exclusion is not the answer | Evening Standard . As a response to our work on reducing exclusions we have been inundated with requests from other school’s across the country who want to visit to look at the ground breaking work we have done in supporting all young people on their journey to success. Please also see our go fund me page where we are raising funds to help our assylum seekers and refugees students purchase uniforms: Fundraiser by Beacon High : Uniforms for disadvantaged secondary pupils ; any donations greatly received.”

Yours sincerely
