William George Nursaw, born 5th September 1903, attended ‘Holloway’ from 1913-1918. Bill was a keen sportsman and at the age of 18 ran youth clubs at the Round Chapel, Clapton Park and then the Congregational Church, Chingford. Bill had a successful career in the City and wrote weekly financial articles for ‘The Observer’ and published a number of books (see website). Bill attended every Old Camdenian dinner from 1923 to 1958, with the exception 1927 and during WWII. Beale’s Restaurant; the Kings Head Hotel; the Comedy Restaurant and the Connaught Rooms. How do we know? Because, Bill’s daughter, Mrs Ann Batterbury (nee Nursaw) has donated Bill’s collection of ‘OCC dinner menu’ cards – all signed by other guests! Wow, many thanks Ann. I have placed them on our website for all to see. Bill passed away on 3rd August 1994. Meanwhile, Ann is trying to piece together more information on Bill
Barbara Stokes Chaubard, daughter of the late professor Eric Thomas Stokes, contacted me from the University of Lorraine, France, concerning an error in the Eminent OC’s list and for information on R.J.King.Whilst scanning the menu cards I made an interesting discovery that at the OCC’s Farewell Dinner for F.R. Hurlston-Jones Esq., M.A., Saturday 7th December 1946: Toasts; ‘The School and Staff’;was proposed by E.T.Stokes, Esq. Yes, Barbara’s father. I emailed Barbara and she replied, “Thank you very much for both your e mails. Quite a coincidence that you have just discovered that my father proposed a toast on Saturday 7th December 1946 at the annual dinner. In October 1946 (aged 22) my father, having served in the Indian Mounted Artillery, returned to Christ’s College, Cambridge to continue his studies. I imagine he enjoyed seeing his old masters and headmaster on this occasion and had a story or two to tell about his time in India.”
